Transportation

electricvehicleGraftonSmall.jpg

Did you know? Flying releases more emissions than ground travel.

For example, an inter-city bus releases 0.09 lbs of CO2-equivalents per passenger-kilometer, while an inter-city car trip causes 0.22 lbs and a plane trip is responsible for 0.47 lbs per passenger-kilometer.

Joe Chilton, Director of Campus Facilities at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, uses the Electric GEM Vehicle to get around campus. On this day, the team was off to look at possible sites for a wind turbine.

Tufts' Green Fleet

Electric Vehicles

These zero-tailpipe emissions vehicles run entirely on battery power and are being used by Mail services, Public Safety and Grounds.
In 2004, Tufts purchased an electric tractor mower called the "Electric Ox" that releases ~ 3 lbs of CO 2 per hour mowing with very little noise pollution, compared to a traditional mower which releases ~ 22 lbs of CO2 quite loudly.

Hybrids
The Tufts Climate Initiative (TCI) Toyota Prius you see around campus is driven by the Tufts Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds.
To see where our green fleet is located, check out the
Green Map of Tufts.

For consumers who are concerned about the extent of their environmental impact, but who cannot avoid flying completely, may wish to neutralize their travel emissions by purchasing carbon offsets. The OOS also has a separate page specifically about Air Travel.
