We are currently hiring for the following student positions:

PLAN Atlas Fellowship - Apply by January 16, 2022

Position Description: The Tufts Office of Sustainability seeks an intern to assist in the assessment of Tufts University’s capacity to achieve institutional and holistic zero waste infrastructure via the Post-Landfill Action Network Atlas Program. All fellows will first go through an online, hands-off Zero Waste Atlas Fellowship, and perform initial pre-assessments with their campus adviser and an Atlas staff member. Following training, the Atlas Fellow will spend the bulk of the Fellowship conducting a series of interviews on their campus with key stakeholders to benchmark their school’s progress towards zero waste.

Hours & Timeframe: The Atlas Fellowship is an approximately 5 hour a week program, designed to be completed over the course of a typical semester - 10-12 weeks. The work will be both in-person and virtual depending on the needs of the task. All work will be done in accordance with Tufts’ COVID-19 safety protocol, including masks and social distancing. Remote work will be possible with the opportunity for in-person work when necessary.

Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Must be internally motivated as internship is very self-directed
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently on projects
  • Strong time management/organizational skills and attention to detail
  • A willingness to navigate conversations with campus administration
  • Comfort with scheduling meetings around other obligations
  • Passionate about progress in the waste realm on campus
Responsibilities & Duties
  • Complete online Atlas trainings early in the semester
  • Attend a one-hour weekly check-in meeting with Fellows from other campuses and Atlas staff
  • Schedule one-on-one meetings with identified stakeholders on campus
  • Interview stakeholders and take thorough notes
  • Complete all questions in the Campus Programs Checklist
  • Identify gaps in information
  • Serve as the liaison between PLAN and Tufts
Compensation: $15.00, work-study only. Course credit is also available.

Events, Outreach, and Programs Intern - Apply by January 21, 2022

Position Description: The Office of Sustainability seeks an Events, Outreach, & Programs Intern to assist the Recycling and Waste Reduction Coordinator. The chosen candidate will organize sustainable waste management at university events and help the OOS plan and execute the annual waste reduction programs including Move Out and Commencement as well as other events throughout the school year. This position is perfect for someone interested in recycling and waste diversion, education, outreach, team building, collaboration, and event management. This intern will hone efficient customer relations, peer leadership, logistics experience, planning, outreach, and presentation skills.
Hours & Timeframe: This is a semester long position with the opportunity for continuation. Commitment is 8-10 hours a week and must be available to assist with move-out and commencement related events at the end of May. Must also be flexible and able to work outside of the regular 9 AM - 5 PM business hours.
All work will be done in accordance with Tufts’ COVID-19 safety protocol, including masks and social distancing. The nature of the position requires in-person work with an occasional opportunity for remote work.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Friendly and outgoing with strong communication skills
  • Comfortable engaging university stakeholders and event participants in zero-waste education
  • Efficient and well organized with great attention to detail
  • Reliable, with excellent time management
  • Capable of independent and collaborative work
  • Comfortable talking and working with faculty and staff from across the university in person, via email, and by phone
Preferred Skills & Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of sustainability efforts at Tufts University
  • Experience leading and managing peers
  • Knowledge about recycling, compost, and landfill waste streams
Pay Rate: $15.00/hr. Work-study is preferred but not required.
