Where do career paths even start? For Danny, it’s been a mix of enduring interest and the hands-on experiences that gradually clarified the kind of work he wanted to do.

Danny comes to Tufts following his job as Sustainability Coordinator in Loyola University Maryland, the same school he studied at in his undergraduate days, where he grew to love the intersection of sustainability and higher education. Now a master’s student studying Sustainability in Tufts UEP department, he’s exploring the role universities play in sustainable change in their local communities, and their role in producing the next generation of climate leaders.

That curiosity is part of what brought him to the Tufts Office of Sustainability. “I wanted to connect with students who care about the same issues I do and really understand how institutional change actually happens,” he shares.

As the Sustainability Program Graduate Assistant, Danny now works closely with students who are building the skills to become the next generation of resilient climate leaders. He supports students in the Sustainable CORE Fellows and Sustainable Solutions Fellows programs, both designed around the idea that students grow most when they’re given real independence and leadership roles, with just the right amount of guidance.

“I’ve noticed a difference in the culture of sustainability here at Tufts,” Danny says. “Back in Loyola’s Office of Sustainability, the focus was on building institution-wide culture, but here, sustainability is present within Tufts’ identity, which unlocks the unique student experience that Jumbos get from our office run programs.”

“It’s incredibly professionally valuable for me to learn how sustainability functions at a bigger university and explore how to support more robust programs,” adds Danny. “If I were to work at another institution developing engaging programs down the line, I would explore using Tufts’ approach as a guide.”

Looking ahead to next semester, Danny says he is especially excited to help develop curriculum for the Experimental College course Sustainable Spring. Drawing from his own experience as a student and sustainability advocate, he hopes to create something that not only educates first- and second-year students across all majors but also inspires them.“I want them to see the role sustainability plays both in their day-to-day lives at Tufts and across industries, and how they can help shape what comes next.”
