Did you know that April is Earth Month? There are many ways to celebrate! Why not commit to doing something daily to reduce your impact? Check out our quick tips, and don’t forget to look below at all the events taking place this month!
APRIL 2
- For The Love Of Bugs

Many insect populations are experiencing steep declines, impacting everything from our food to our forests. And since humans have a symbiotic relationship with insects (e.g. we need them, they need us), what happens to them is bound to have an effect on us. Join us to discuss….for the love of bugs. And humans, you could say. This event is hosted by one of the recipients of the Green Fund who is also hosting the Edible Insects Festival on April 17 and 18.

As Biology, Tufts University professor Sara Lewis explains, “it’s remarkable that 2 billion people around the world already consume insects as part of their daily diet. Yet here in the U.S., there’s an ‘ick’ aversion that we need to overcome. So we see this festival as a catalyst for changing the way people feel about eating insects.” Join us for the Edible Insect Festival this spring at Tufts University! Chef Joseph Yoon of Brooklyn Bugs will join us to host workshops and demos on Wednesday, April 17th. Details here

The Sustainability Task Force at the SMFA has planned this event to honor Julie Graham, a professor at the SMFA who recently passed of lung cancer. This day will be used to celebrate and investigate the ways in which artists can make an environmental difference locally, give the community access to new and safe tools, remind ourselves of ways to operate responsibly in the studio and remember an artist who dedicated her life to creative material solutions. Students for Environmental Awareness and EcoReps invite you to the annual Earth Fest, a FREE event on the Academic Quad to celebrate sustainability in the community in honor of Earth Day. The event will include live music, a vegetarian cookout provided by the GreEco Reps, a clothing exchange hosted by the Eco Reps, and tables hosted by all of your favorite student groups and local organizations. Nature lovers can join the Somerville Conservation Commission to identify and document plant and animal species in Draw Seven Park as part of the City Nature Challenge, a global effort to document urban biodiversity. Afterwards, head up to Somerville Central Library to plant trees and learn about raised bed gardening at the Growing in the City: Arbor Day and Urban Gardening Festival.
