Office of Sustainability Events

Tufts University and The Office of Sustainability serve as role models. Reaching out to and networking with other organizations and institutions is key in promoting sustainable practices, such as energy and resource efficiency. The Office of Sustainability engages in numerous outreach activities such as sponsoring and organizing events, speaking to external audiences, distributing educational materials, and maintaining this webpage. Eco-Rep Symposium

Saturday November 7, 2009  • 12:30 PM - 6:30 PM

The Tufts University Office of Sustainability and the Tufts Institute for the Environment are hosting a half-day conference for college students region wide to share best practices in peer-to-peer education.  Eco-Reps are students who promote environmental stewardship among residential students by raising awareness about ecological issues and encouraging environmentally conscious behavior.

Mass Climate Action Network Conference

Sunday, November 15th from 9:00-5:00

Join climate activists from across the state at the 8th Annual Mass Climate Action Network Conference.  Speakers include Gina McCarthy; the EPA Assistant Administrator who leads the EPA's climate efforts.
 
There will be fifteen panels on issues ranging from saving energy in your own home to building a climate movement in your town to the future of energy and the Copenhagen talks.

Volunteer for the MCAN conference, and attend for free

Volunteers are needed on Sunday, November 15 (some as early as 7:00 am) to help set up, greet, register, organize, monitor workshops, recycle, and clean up. In return for 4 hours of work, you attend the conference for free. To volunteer, email Susan Altman.


Deep Energy Retrofit Pilot Workshop

This workshop will be open to residential gas and electric customers in MA and RI as well as contractors, architects and other energy professionals who are interested in being involved in residential deep energy retrofits and interested in learning about the National Grid's Deep Energy Retrofit Pilot program.

Global Day of Climate Action

This Saturday, October 24, 2009, 4,000+ events will take place in over 164 countries around the world to mark the Global Day of Climate Action.  Join the rest of the world in calling for a binding, comprehensive, fair and equitable international treaty on climate change at the December UN summit in Copenhagen.

Come be a part of history!

Join us this Saturday from 11am to 1pm on the upper patio at the Mayer Campus Center in Medford for local food, music, speakers, information on how to get involved, and a special treat! After the rally, a group will head to Davis to take the T to the Boston Under Water Festival.

Join Office of Sustainability Director Sarah Hammond Creighton for a Green Tour of campus! Discover where the solar panels are on campus, what a steam trap is and the mystery behind the dish room window; amongst other interesting tidbits about the sustainability efforts at Tufts.

Meet at the Office of Sustainability (back of Miller Hall – across the parking lot from the entrance to Hillel).

Tour will depart promptly at 12:30. Rain or shine.

Bring comfortable walking shoes and dress for being outside.

Sarah Hammond Creighton directs the Tufts Office of Sustainability.  She has twenty years of experience in campus greening, campus sustainability, climate change action, green buildings, energy efficiency, and renewable energy at Tufts and with Massachusetts state government.   She is author of Greening the Ivory Tower:  Improving the Environmental Track Record of Universities, Colleges and Other Institutions, and co-author of Degrees that Matter:  Climate Change and the University. 

Ms. Creighton holds a B.S. in Physics from Bates College and an M.S. in Environmental Policy and Civil and Environmental Engineering from Tufts.

Bike commuters should stop by the Fletcher School lobby (Cabot Intercultural Center) for some free bike goodie bags from MassRides and treats from the Danish Pastry House.
 
During the rest of the morning MassRides will be touring the bike racks on campus with the Office of Sustainability to reward cyclists. 
 
Noon - 1 PM
Vet School community members can join a bike rally at the Agnes Varis Campus Center with MassRides.
 
Thursday, May 14th 
 
Noon - 1 PM
Tufts Health Sciences bike commuters have a chance to shine in the Food 4 Thought cafe in the Sackler Center in Boston. Meet other cyclists and collect some MassRides keepsakes to thank you for reducing your carbon footprint this week.

Composting in the Campus Center

March 30 - April 28, 2009

A dual initiative between Tufts Office of Sustainability and Tufts Recycles!
Composting of leftover food is now available in the campus center, during a month-long trial run to assess how much use and contamination will occur.

What CAN be composted?

 
ALL food waste, including: 
  • dairy products
  • all types of meat
  • rice, pasta, bread, etc
  • beans, fruits and vegetables
  • tea bags

What CANNOT be composted?

 
Non-food items such as:
  • Styrofoam products
  • Plastic coated paper products (e.g. coffee cups)
  • Plastic lids, cups, straws, utensils
  • Liquids

WHY are we composting?

Composting reduces the amount of solid waste sent to landfills by 62% and allows organic materials to break down naturally.
