Need to make a trip to the grocery store, move stuff, or just want to get away for a weekend with friends? Zipcar is the perfect solution. Zipcar is an on-campus, on-demand car rental service which lets you use cars (including cargo and 7-passenger vans!) when you need them by the hour or by the day, with the price of gas and insurance included. The cars are conveniently located on campus (and off!) and start at the price of $8.25 per hour and can be unlocked with a membership card after making a reservation online or on your smart phone. Memberships are available to everyone 18 or older, including staff, faculty and students (including international students) from all Tufts University schools and programs.
Notice: Zipcar updated their Membership Contract in February 2015. Read the new agreement terms, here.
Note that for insurance reasons, drivers under the age of 21 must download and fill out the Insurance Acknowledgement Form upon completing Zipcar’s online application. The Insurance Acknowledgement Form [coming soon] must be signed by a parent or legal guardian and submitted to zipcar@Tufts.edu, faxed to (617) 627-3392 or brought in person to the TUPD administrative services window on the first floor of Dowling Hall, Medford before membership approval.
Students can join for just $15* for a one year membership and faculty and staff can join for $35* (with discounted Mon-Fri driving rates). There is no application fee, monthly minimum, or membership deposit. Daily and overnight rates are also available. Gas, insurance, and 180 miles are included.
Zipcar can help to solve parking problems in urban areas while also providing a way for people to get around without owning a car.
Turo (formerly RelayRides) is a neighbor-to-neighbor car sharing company connecting people who need a car with vehicle owners whose rides would otherwise just be sitting unused. Rent one for as little as $10/day. Borrowers as young as 21 can use this service.
Get rewarded for taking greener trips! Whenever you avoid using a car—whether you walk, bike, telecommute, carpool, vanpool, take a subway, train, bus, ferry, or even work a compressed work week – you can earn 100 points per trip. Redeem the points for discounts or freebies at local and online establishments. NuRide also offers a ride matching program that helps commuters quickly and securely find carpool partners.
RidePost is a trusted ridesharing community where travelers meet and share rides across the U.S. “It’s a friendlier way to travel—one that’s good for the environment, good for your wallet, and great for getting to know new people.”
