What is TerraCycle?
TerraCycle is a program that creates an alternative to throwing out non-recyclable materials. TerraCycle collects non-recyclable and hard to recycle products and creates them into new products. Any group or organization can sign-up for a TerraCycle program, or a Brigade, and send TerraCycle their waste. With new brigades constantly added, you can be sure to find a suitable one for you.
The Brigades at Tufts were initially started by the Tisch Sustainability Team, and now several groups on campus are collecting energy wrappers. Initially both energy bar wrappers and snacks bags were collected. However, as of March 1, 2014, Tufts is no longer part of the Snack Bag Brigade due to limited funding for the brigade.
How much has Tufts Collected?
Since March 2013, Tufts has collected and sent in over 14.21 pounds of energy bar wrappers! We’ll be sending in another shipment of energy bar wrappers soon.
In February 2014, Tufts went out with a bang by sending in our last and largest shipment of snack bag wrappers to TerraCycle – Over 14 pounds worth of wrappers were packed and shipped!
What does Tufts Collect?
Tufts is currently part of the Energy Bar Wrapper Brigade. But what does that mean?
For the Energy Bar Wrapper Brigade, the following items qualify:
- Foil-lined energy bar wrappers
- Foil-lined granola bar wrappers
- Foil-lined meal replacement bar wrappers
- Foil-lined protein bar wrappers
- Foil-lined diet bar wrappers
- Clif Bar & Co. wrappers from Clif Bars, Luna Bars, MOJO, Builders, Crunch, Clif Kid Z-Bar, Kits Organic, Clif Kid Z-Fruit, Shot Blocks, Shot Gels, and Shot Drinks.
The Energy Bar Wrapper Brigade does not accept candy bars or cookie bags. If you would like to collect items other than energy bar wrappers or chip bags, check out the TerraCycle Brigade list and start your own.
Where can I bring my wrappers?
Tisch Library has collection points in the Tower Café immediately to the left of the double doors as you walk in, as well as in the staff room. 80 George Street has collection boxes in each of their kitchens too. All dorms have TerraCycle designated boxes set out – If you don’t know where they are located, ask your Eco-Rep!
All of these bags and wrappers will eventually be collected and stored at the Office of Sustainability, so feel free to bring them directly to us as well!
Please clean your wrappers as best as possible before you drop it off at a collection point. While TerraCycle says not to worry about food waste in the wrappers, we are storing them in our office and want to reduce the possibility of attracting any pests.
For any questions that are unanswered, please feel free to contact our office or TerraCycle directly.
