What is TerraCycle?
TerraCycle is a program that creates an alternative to throwing out non-recyclable materials. TerraCycle collects non-recyclable and hard to recycle products and creates them into new products . Any group or organization can sign-up for a TerraCycle program, or a Brigade, and send TerraCycle their waste.
The Brigades at Tufts were initially started by the Tisch Sustainability Team, and now there are several groups on campus collecting there wrappers and bags.
How much has Tufts Collected?
Since May, we have collected over 350 chip bags and over 500 energy bar wrappers. Since TerraCycle asks that individuals collect 350 chip bags or 500 energy bag wrappers before sending in their collections we will be sending in our wrappers soon!
What does Tufts Collect?
Tufts currently has two Brigades, the Chip Bag Brigade and the Energy Bar Wrapper Brigade.
So what does this mean?
In the Chip Bag Brigade you can send in chip bags, tortilla chip bags, pretzel bags, pita chip bags, bagel chip bags, soy crisp bags, or any salty snack bags.
This does not include cookie bags. There is a separate Brigade for cookies.

The Energy Bar Wrapper Brigade does not accept candy bars or cookie bags. There is a separate Brigade for cookies and another for candy bars.
If you would like to collect items other than energy bar wrappers or chip bags, check out the TerraCycle Brigade list and start your own.
Where can I bring my wrappers and bags?
Tisch has collection points in the Tower Café immediately to the left of the double doors as you walk in. 80 George Street has collection points in each of their kitchens as well. All of these bags and wrappers will eventually be collected and stored at the Office of Sustainability, so feel free to bring them directly to us as well!
Please make sure that as much food waste as possible is removed from bags before you bring them. While TerraCycle says not to worry about food waste in the bags, but since we are storing them in our office we don’t want to attract any mice.
